We start Marrakech food tour this tour experience at the beautiful and legendary Djemaa El-Fna square, where trade, haggling, and encounters have taken place for nearly a thousand years. You will immediately feel the history, tradition and culture. After an initial briefing, we will walk through the small streets leading off the square.
On the way, we will stop at hidden local stalls that most tourists won’t find, to taste some of the many different versions of olives, and nibble on nuts and other typical Moroccan treats, before heading to the poultry/beef market to see how the locals shop and haggle. The charming Riad Zitoun has several bistros with rooftop terraces, serving mint tea and European dishes with Moroccan touches. Riad hotels, housed in large old houses with courtyards, stand alongside traditional hammams and shops selling pottery, caftans and leather bags. The 19th-century Bahia Palace has intricately decorated interiors and walled gardens, while the Dar Si Siad Museum displays Berber crafts and jewellery.
The narrow streets of Mellah were once home to the city’s Jewish population, as evidenced by the Lazama synagogue, with its tiled courtyard and exhibitions on Jewish life, and the peaceful Jewish cemetery of Miaara. Nearby is the lively Mellah market, with meat of all kinds and many other products, and the Bab Mellah spice souk.
Located in the Méchoui alley, behind the Alhambra restaurant in Jemaa el-Fnaa, is Lamine’s unmissable stall, adorned with sheep’s heads and “Tangia” simmers. The meat dishes are cooked in the ashes of the coals of the local public baths. Most people come during the day for the succulent mechoui, but the beef pots are served all day and are just as delicious. The juices that collect at the bottom of the bowl are a treat with the local bread.
Considered the main artery of the souks of the Medina, the Souk Semmarine is accessible from Jemaa El Fna square, in a derb (alleyway of the Medina) bearing the same name. This name comes from the farriers who used to use this strategic place to shoe the animals of the caravaneers, while they were doing their usual shopping.

We really enjoyed this tour. Ali was really friendly and informative and could answer any questions we had about anything. We got taken to parts of the souk that we hadn’t seen or found before and ate lots of things that we wouldn’t have thought to try or even known about, all of which was delicious. We loved our foodie tour of the Marrakech medina! The guide has enthusiasm for sharing Marrakech and its medina culture was infectious. The tour was well paced, alternating visits to culturally interesting spots (the neighborhood bread oven, the Touareg pharmacy) with tastings (Moroccan “donuts” and “crepes,” olives, fruits, pastries, 3 different teas at different stops, soup in the Djemaa el-Fna, a traditionally made tanjia, and much more…we tasted everything, bought a few things (olives are super cheap in the medina!) and learned a lot about Morrocan cuisine and culture. This tour was an excellent value for us.
